Orson Scott Card became a controversial figure back in the 90s, but like genre media itself, it was pretty limited back then. And you don’t have to dig too far to discover that most of the Sci-Fi writers of that generation had pretty extreme ideas of one sort or another.

I’m guessing the idea of him writing a figure as iconic as Superman was too much for the zeitgeist to bear. The character has always been an amalgam of the philosophy of the author expressed through his magical powers, and a gay bashing bully in a skin-tight costume is as terrifying as it is ironic.
