The first trailer for this movie was intriguing, seeming to promise something that would deliver on the Del Toro’s improved skills as a fantasy visionary that he showed off in Pan’s Labyrinth.

To be honest Hellboy II now looks to be as much a big budget sequel to his Oscar winning indie movie as it is to the first Hellboy. And, according to this trailer, it’s going to be stuffed to the brim with the kind of strange fairytale monsters that we saw coming out of Ofelia’s imagination in his grim fantasy epic.

The movies seem to have diverged pretty wildly from the more understated gothic underpinnings of the original comic books, and it’s pretty clear that while Hellboy is still Mike Mignola’s baby, he’s being raised up into the movie star by the director, Guillermo del Toro.
