Euro Sc-Fi is always interesting to me. My experience tells me that they can get the beat right, but the songs aren’t always so good.
These trailers make the action look good, and with these kinds of films you often get amazing, hyper-imaginative visuals that are well outside of what traditional Hollywood films would ever consider. But there is also usually story filled with the kind earnest cliches that make me teeth ache.
If you don’t know what I’m talking about, how about this: The Fifth Element was love! Yeah… great.
Hey Drew,
Excellent take on Euro-sci-fi. Tracy saw “Fifth Element” at a formative age, and was so traumatized that she’s still a hard sell on most sci-fi. And not just Euro; it took me years to even get her to check out “Firefly.” Damn you, Bruce and Mila!
On a similar note, I would avoid “Doomsday” at all costs. Aside from one good medieval combat scene, and having the saving grace of giving temporary gainful employment to a bunch of Euro-Burners and Ren-Festers, I otherwise found it to be a hackneyed amalgam of “Escape from New York”, “The Road Warrior”, “Reign of Fire” and “28 Days Later.” Bleechhh.
Take it easy,
Scott
