Something about the writer’s strike feels like it’s going to get ugly to me. In this case it looks like the studios are trying to make a stand as we shift into a new medium, and they’re willing to dig deep into their own pockets to drive home the point.
Unfortunately playing hardball could end up costing them. Unlike television, the big studios aren’t the only game in town when it comes to digital distribution, and making television a less profitable endeavor for them means that the talent may ultimately go elsewhere.
The music industry is starting to learn this lesson the hard way, I guess television is eager to join them.
What’s entertaining is watching the writers guild realize that they have other means to get the message out. They’ve produced a video that clearly states what they’re fighting for, and they’re not waiting for TV news to give them a sympathetic outlet.
