Beyond Good & Evil 2: Things I cannot believe

There’s probably very few readers of this blog that actually played the first BG&E. That’s okay, because very few people anywhere played the game.

It was brilliant in its own way, being an early example of the kind of action-story adventure that’s become much more common on the current generation of hardware. But unlike those games it isn’t that dark or particularly gritty.

Being French it has more of a “City of Lost Children” feel to the proceedings.  A modern fairy tale if you will. And despite a light beam puzzle, which seemed to infect every game around that time, it was as fun to play as it was to watch.

A true cult classic I figured that we would never seen the further adventures of Jade and her porcine friend.  Turns out I was wrong:

I’m more than pleasantly surprised by the news.

Like the Firefly movie it’ll probably go down in flames, never to be seen again, but at least we’ll get one more great ride.

DC vs. Mortal Combat

Watch this:

Okay take a few seconds.

Breathe… Breathe….

Now that you’ve gotten over the shock, let’s talk.

I’ve never liked Mortal Combat.  It’s a video game series that has never had the courage of its convictions, constantly going for goofy when it needed to get deep. Sort of the antithesis of what works in the Soul Caliber series.

With that in mind I’m not sure how the addition of these two elements provides synergy for either one. I guess it’ll be nice to play some of the DC heroes, but extreme power characters like Superman and The Flash are going to have to be pretty dumbed down to work in this context.

Sonic the Hedgehog, we never knew ye.

The funny thing about a major character is its tenacity. No matter how many crap sequels, sticker books, mini-games, or regrettable ad campaigns it ends up in, it will get trotted out to the street corner one more time, trying to turn another buck on its long faded beauty.  The sad thing is that it often works.

There’s probably no character that’s been more prostituted than Sonic the Hedgehog. Once bigger than both Mickey Mouse and Mario in the minds of America’s youth, over the last decade Sonic has managed to flounder, never figuring out what his core values are, and introducing a “dark twin”, Shadow, that served only to muddy up the waters even more.
The other problem is the character in the game and in the television versions of the character have diverged radically. His basic premise is that
a) He’s a hedgehog
b) He runs really really fast

The cartoon has remained a cartoon, while the games have repeatedly tried to make the character into the real world, with decidedly unpleasant results.

But all the CG graphics in the world can’t help the fact that the fundamental high-speed platforming gameplay has never managed to transcend its 2D roots and prove that it works in modern environments the Mario 64 reinvented the game back in the late 90s.

They’re trying one more time, with Sonic Unleashed, which looks to be slightly better, by focusing on making the camera work for the trademark high speed action. But the character wil. also transform into a werewolf version with entirely different gameplay.  It has more than a whiff of desperation about it…

Legend of Zelda Movie Trailer

Okay, so it’s an April Fools joke.  But on a day when most people were complaining about how stupid most of them were, this is actually pretty good on its own merits.

There’s lots of nice in-jokes nestled inside of the sweet candy shell.  Yes, it falls apart in parts, but what do you want for nothing?

Kings of Power 4 Billion %

Paul Roberston makes animations that come from a world made out of pure 2D videogames.  HIs first magnum opus, Pirate Babys Cabana Battle Street Fight, was an awesome homage to the 2D brawler.

Kings of Power is a little deeper, and far stranger…  But they’re always entertaining and very well animated.

The images are amazing, even if they are very gory, bizarre , and slightly NSFW. It’s clear that his imgination is only bounded by the limits of time and space.

If you want something a little more hi-rez you can find the download links here.
